The advertising is in the grid rather than around it, but it is labelled. Sponsored entries sit among the real uploads carrying a prefix that says so, and a blog post promoting a third-party search tool is marked the same way. That labelling is worth crediting, because most tubes salt their feeds with paid placements and say nothing.

It also lets you see something the site presumably did not intend to advertise: the most-viewed item on the whole service, at nearly two million views, is one of those adverts. The traffic figures on the front page are not measuring what the community made.

What the community did make is homemade video, uploaded by members, sorted by recent, top-rated, most-discussed and longest, with a premium tier priced at twenty-five dollars sitting alongside the free listings and a recommended-sites panel pointing outward.

Accounts are free and wanted for uploading, commenting and saving.

The standing caveat for member-upload sites applies in full: the person who pressed upload is not necessarily everyone who appears in the clip, and the tags here run heavily to girlfriend footage.
