Adult Film Database has been cataloguing since 1999, and it is organised the way the industry was organised then: films as releases, studios as publishers, performers as credited cast. Actors, studios, videos and galleries each have their own index. This is a filmography rather than a tube, and the unit is a title with a production behind it.

That structure has become more valuable rather than less as the industry moved to clips. Tubes strip the release a scene came from, so the only way to establish what a performer actually appeared in, or what a studio actually put out in a given year, is a database that predates the stripping.

The DVD and video-on-demand orientation shows its age, and that is part of the point — a great deal of what it covers exists nowhere else in indexed form.

What any reference source depends on is upkeep, and nothing here indicates how current the records are or who maintains them.
