Type the wrong noun and this genre looks empty. Type the right one and it turns out to be one of the largest single tags in doujinshi. That gap is not a content problem, it is a vocabulary problem, and it is almost the entire reason lists of "the best sites" for this keep disappointing people.
The four words
Femboy is the English default now. It describes a feminine-presenting male character and it is the term most Western readers arrive with.
Otokonoko (男の娘) is the Japanese genre label, and on any archive that indexes translated doujinshi properly it is the tag with the real depth behind it, because it is what the original works were categorised as before anyone translated them.
Crossdressing is a wardrobe tag, not a character tag, and it is where several readers file this material because their taxonomy was built around what is depicted rather than who is depicted. It over-matches badly — plenty of what it returns is not this genre at all — but on sites that have no femboy tag, it is the door.
Trap is the older term, still carries substantial search traffic, and is contested enough that some communities and boards have banned it. Whatever you think of that argument, the practical fact is what matters here: an archive's position on the word determines whether the tag exists on that archive at all.
None of these four is the correct answer. Which one works depends entirely on which archive you are standing in.
How to check a reader in thirty seconds
Do not guess at tag URLs. Constructing `/tag/femboy/` by hand is how people conclude a site has nothing, when what actually happened is that the site spells it differently.
Go to the reader's tag index — every serious archive has one — and search it for all four words plus josou and shemale. Whichever returns a live tag with a count is that site's canonical label. Then sort that tag by newest and look at the top date. A tag with thousands of entries and nothing added in three years is a graveyard you will exhaust in a week; a smaller tag updated last Tuesday is the better subscription.
That thirty-second check is worth more than any ranking, because it survives the site redesign that will invalidate the ranking.
Why the volume is in comics, not video
The pattern holds across almost every niche in animated adult content, and it is worth understanding rather than rediscovering: drawing is cheap and animating is not.
A doujinshi is one artist and a deadline. An animated episode is a studio, a budget, a schedule and a commercial case for making it. So niches that are large enough to sustain a devoted amateur comics scene but too small to justify animation budgets end up with enormous still-image archives and a handful of video titles — and this is squarely one of those niches.
Which means the standard shape of a "best sites" list for this genre is upside down. Lead with tubes and you are ranking the shallow end. The manga and doujinshi readers are the category; the video sites are a footnote to it.
What actually separates good archives from bad ones
Four things, in descending order of how much they matter:
- Whether the tag is first-class. A genre listed in the navigation is maintained. A tag that exists only because uploaders typed it is not, and its accuracy will be all over the place.
- Whether the tag is fed. Check the newest entry. This is the single most predictive number on the page.
- Whether tagging is enforced. Community-moderated archives correct bad tags. Free-for-all uploads do not, and loosely applied tags are the main reason a large count disappoints.
- Whether the reader is usable. Page-turn speed, resolution, and whether it wants an account. Most of the big archives are free and look like it; you learn the interface once.
Notably absent from that list: total gallery count. It is the number every listicle leads with and the least useful one, because it does not distinguish fifty thousand accurately tagged works from fifty thousand loose matches.
