Anonymity is the whole premise of this genre, and it is the part that is least real. Almost everything sold under this label is shot against a partition built for the purpose, on a set, with people who were booked in advance, paid, and told what the scene was. The wall is a prop. The surprise is a performance. Understanding that is not a spoiler — it is the difference between reading the format as documentary and reading it as what it is, which is a staging convention with a very specific look.
The convention, and what it borrowed
The practice the name comes from is older than any of the video of it, and it existed for a practical reason: partitioned anonymity between strangers in semi-public places, where not being identified was the point and the protection. What the genre took from that was the visual — a wall, an aperture, a participant who is only a body part — and essentially nothing else. In the produced version, anonymity is not protecting anyone. It is set dressing on a scene where everyone present knows exactly who everyone else is.
That inversion is worth holding onto, because it explains the strange thing about how these scenes get catalogued.
Who gets named
Go through a roundup of this genre and count the credits. The performer on the visible side of the wall is usually named. The people on the other side of it are, structurally, never named — the format has removed them from the frame, and the indexing follows the frame.
The legacy version of this page did exactly that across every entry it listed. That is not an editorial choice anyone made; it is what happens when a format designed around facelessness meets a cataloguing system that records what it can see. The effect is a genre where a substantial share of the labour is uncredited by construction, and where you cannot answer basic questions — who else was in this, what was agreed, who produced it — from the material itself.
Produced, or presented as covert
Some content in this category goes further and presents itself as secretly filmed: a hidden camera, an unaware participant, a real encounter that happened to be recorded. Treat that framing as a claim about the material, and one that has only two possible readings. Either it is a fiction, in which case it is a production style and the marketing is doing what marketing does — or it is not a fiction, in which case it describes something nobody could have agreed to beforehand.
There is no third option where it is authentic and fine. When you cannot tell which reading applies, the useful question is not about the footage, it is about the source: does the site publish who made it, name its cast, run a verification process for uploaders, and have somebody to write to about a removal? A studio site answers all four. An anonymous re-upload answers none of them. That gap is the actual signal, and it is visible before you press play.
