Look at the shape of the 2023 shortlist before you look at any entry on it. Eight items, counted down to a winner, and the winner is not a game — it is the shop the other entries are sold in. That single structural fact tells a buyer more about what they were reading than any of the eight write-ups did, and it was the one thing the countdown never mentioned.
The thing at number one is a storefront
Nutaku launched in January 2015 through a partnership with the Japanese company DMM, and it distributes rather than develops. It carries north of five hundred free-to-play and paid titles and reported fifty million registered accounts in early 2020. Calling it the best adult game of a given year is a category error in the same way that calling Steam the best PC game of 2023 would be: it is where you buy things, and its catalogue is the thing being judged.
That matters because most of the rest of the countdown lives inside it. PocketWaifu, BootyCalls, KingOfKinks, CuntWars and HentaiHeroes are all free-to-play titles in that orbit — Hentai Heroes, released by the studio Kinkoid in July 2016, is carried there under the name Harem Heroes. A list that reads as eight independent recommendations is closer to one distribution channel plus five of its products plus LifeSelector, which sells something structurally different, and 3D SexVilla 2, from the Austrian studio thriXXX, which has been making adult games since 2001 and is the only entry this site's own directory no longer carries a route for.
Who owns the shop is a checkable fact and it was left out
Nutaku is a Montreal operation owned by Aylo. Aylo is the company that was MindGeek until August 2023, when it rebranded following its acquisition that March by Ethical Capital Partners, an Ottawa private-equity firm. Reporting in 2025 drawn from filings in US litigation has since disputed the clean version of that sale, alleging that the previous owners remained involved and that the purchase price was not fully paid; that is an allegation in court documents rather than a settled finding, and it is worth knowing in exactly that form.
None of this makes a storefront untrustworthy. It does mean that an adult-gaming recommendation and an adult-tube recommendation can lead back to the same corporate parent, which is the sort of thing a reader is entitled to weigh for themselves.
"Free" describes the download, not the game
The 2023 write-ups treated microtransactions as a per-title blemish — a caution about PocketWaifu here, a note about BootyCalls there. They are not a blemish. They are the architecture of the whole category. A browser or mobile adult game on this model is built around an energy meter that empties, a wait that can be skipped, and a premium currency you buy in bundles priced so that the bundle never quite matches what you need. Randomised character pulls sit on top of that. The design goal is not a one-off sale, it is a spending habit.
Which reframes the scam question the original title raised. Almost nothing here takes your money and vanishes. The realistic failure mode is far duller: you spend more than you meant to, in small increments, on a system engineered to make each increment feel trivial. No graphics comparison will warn you about that, and eight paragraphs praising character models cannot, because monetisation is not visible in a screenshot.
What you can actually verify before spending
- Whether the game is free-to-play with an energy or stamina gate. If it is, assume the model above and set a number before you start.
- Whether the currency is prepaid platform credit or a direct charge. Prepaid credit is harder to get refunded and is designed to be left over.
- Whose name appears on the charge. Adult billing frequently shows an intermediary, which matters if you later need to dispute it.
- Whether there is a published refund policy, and whether it survives having spent the currency.
- What the storefront requires for age assurance, and what it therefore stores about you.
- Whether the developer and the distributor are the same entity — and if not, which of them you would be arguing with.
Every one of those is answerable in a few minutes from the outside, without buying anything. Not one of them appeared in the original countdown.
On the ranking, and on 2023
No ranking is reproduced here, and the reason is boring rather than principled: nothing on that list was played for this article, prices and catalogues in this category move constantly, and a numbered order carried forward from three years ago is a claim about the present that nobody has checked. What the titles are and how they take payment can be established from public material and has been. Which one you would enjoy most cannot, by anybody, on your behalf.

Read it with the money question in front of the graphics question and you will be doing something the 2023 version never asked you to do.
