Vintage Cuties Review

A hundred and forty years of erotic photography in one place is a genuinely unusual object, and it comes with a problem that cannot be solved.

Vintage Cuties collects still photography and film from roughly 1850 through 1990, organised by era and by category. The earliest material predates cinema and sits at the beginning of photographic erotica altogether; the later end runs into the modern industry. Browsing it in sequence is a compressed history of how the form changed — what was considered explicit, how bodies were posed, what the technology allowed.

The unresolvable part is that nothing is known about how most of these images were made. Nineteenth and early twentieth century erotica was produced without releases, without any legal framework for consent, frequently anonymously, and often under economic conditions that made refusal difficult. The people in the oldest photographs died long ago and no record of their agreement exists or ever did. That is not a criticism of this site, which did not create the situation, but it is the honest frame for the material.

Some category names carry the racial framing of the period they come from and read badly now.
